LITERARY

I started out writing poetry and short prose pieces. Most of them they were published in serious literary magazines – but a very, very slow trickle of productivity!

My total literary output was collected in the volume Testimony (published 1981).

The poems had previously come out in New Poetry, Southern Review, Makar, Quadrant, The Bulletin, Poetry Australia, Westerly.

The prose pieces (monologues) came out in New Poetry, Nepean Review, Blacksmith, Westerly.

ACADEMIC WRITING

Beyond Superstructuralism cover

The first book-length writings I managed to finish came out while I was a lecturer at the University of Wollongong. Very abstract, very theoretical! Language theory was always my main focus; Superstructulism and Literary Theory from Plato to Barthes are mainly expositions of other people’s ideas; Beyond Superstructuralism is the truly original one.

1987 Superstructuralism: The Philosophy of Structuralism and Post-Structuralism (Methuen, UK)

1993 Beyond Superstructuralism: The Syntagmatic Side of Language (Routledge, UK)

1999 Literary Theory from Plato to Barthes (Macmillan, UK)
